MARSKE RESERVOIR – SUSPECTED BLUE-GREEN ALGAE BLOOM

IMPORTANT NOTICE TO MEMBERS – MARSKE RESERVOIR – SUSPECTED BLUE-GREEN ALGAE BLOOM

Middlesbrough Angling Club would like to make members aware of a suspected blue-green algae bloom at Marske Reservoir.

The suspected bloom has been reported to the Environment Agency, and an Environment Agency officer attended the reservoir today to collect a water sample. This sample is being sent to laboratories in Newcastle for analysis.

Blue-green algae (cyanobacteria) can produce toxins that are potentially harmful to humans, animals and wildlife.

⚠️ PRECAUTIONS FOR ANGLERS

Until the results are known, we ask all members to take the following precautions:

  • Avoid direct contact with the water wherever possible.
  • Do not touch or disturb any visible algae, surface scum or discoloured water.
  • Blue green algae can be harmful to small mammals, dogs etc – No dogs on the res so this shouldn’t be a problem.
  • Wash hands thoroughly after handling fish, nets or other wet equipment, particularly before eating or drinking.
  • Keep cuts and open wounds covered with waterproof dressings.
  • Avoid splashing water onto your face or into your mouth.
  • Clean fishing equipment and footwear after use, taking care not to transfer potentially contaminated water to other fisheries. Follow the CHECK CLEAN DRY guidance.

PLEASE NOTE: The presence of blue-green algae and any associated toxins has not yet been confirmed by laboratory analysis. This notice is being issued as a precaution to protect the health and safety of our members.

The club is working with the Environment Agency and will provide further updates when the laboratory findings are received.

Thank you for your understanding and cooperation.
